“M.I.A. created a mashup, cut-and-paste identity that pulled inspiration from every corner of her journey; a sonic sketchbook that blends Tamil politics, Art school punk, hip-hop beats, and the voice of multicultural youth” —Sundance Institute

Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. is a documentary about controversial rap artist/activist M.I.A. The award-winning film affords remarkably candid access to the pop star, compiled from 22 years of recordings made by her friend, filmmaker Steven Loveridge. The title’s three names represent her metamorphosis from Matangi, the child of a Tamil activist in Sri Lankan, to Maya, British refugee to M.I.A., rap artist.
